Jaguar S-Type debuts in 1998
Jaguar introduces the S-Type on Oct. 20, 1998, at the Birmingham auto show in England. The rear-wheel-drive sedan, built on a new platform shared with Ford Motor Co.’s Lincoln LS and Ford Thunderbird, added a third model to Jaguar’s luxury sedan and sports car lineup. It went on sale in North America in the spring of 1999 as Jaguar’s first 2000 model. The S-Type name was adopted to pay tribute to Jaguar’s high-performance 3.8 S-type of the 1960s. The car, designed by Geoff Lawson, also paid homage to Jaguar’s design legacy. David Szczupak, chief engineer for the S-Type project, said the primary goal of designing a smaller and sportier Jaguar was creating a four-door car with the appeal of the XK8. It was equipped with a 3.0-liter AJ-V6 engine or a 4.0-liter AJ-V8 engine. Both were paired with a new five-speed automatic transmission developed for the platform. The S-Type featured a double-wishbone suspension; forged-aluminum control arms to keep weight low; and a speed-sensitive, variable-ratio rack-and-pinion steering system. It was available with a sport package that added Jaguar’s adaptive computer active technology suspension and 17-inch wheels with Z-rated tires. Among the car’s innovations was a system of voice-activated controls to operate the climate control, audio system and telephone. A supercharged S-Type R model joined the lineup in 2002. U.S. sales peaked at 24,507 in 2000, and the car was dropped after the 2008 model year. Jaguar is readying a new compact luxury sedan -- the XE -- to take on the BMW 3 series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C class. It goes on sale in the spring.
