VW group sales slip 0.8% in Sept.

Volkswagen AG's group sales in China slipped 0.8 percent year on year to 318,400 vehicles in September as the German automaker continued to lose market share to rivals. The company's brands posted mixed results. Volkswagen brand sales fell 1.7 percent and Skoda deliveries declined 4.2 percent last month. But Audi -- China's top-selling luxury brand -- reported a sales increase of 2.9 percent while Porsche deliveries jumped 24 percent.

Light-vehicle export slump continues

China's vehicle exports went into free fall in September, with shipments slumping 29 percent year on year to 55,600 vehicles, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Exports of passenger vehicles fell nearly 25 percent to 36,500, while shipments of commercial vehicles plunged 36 percent to 19,100.

China FAW Group Corp.'s two domestic car-making subsidiaries warned last week of third-quarter losses due to intensifying competition in China's sedan market. From July through September, FAW Car Co. estimated its losses ranged from 124 million yuan to 154 million yuan ($19 million to $24 million). FAW Group's other domestic subsidiary, Tianjin Xiali Automobile Co., said its quarterly losses likely ranged from 260 million to 360 million yuan ($40.8 million to $56 million) in the third quarter.

Toyota, Nissan Sept. deliveries edge up

Nissan Motor Co.'s China sales edged up 2.9 percent year on year to 97,900 vehicles in September, adding momentum to the industry's turnaround after a slow summer. Toyota Motor Corp. also reported a modest upturn in September, with China deliveries rising 1.7 percent to 92,700. Earlier this month, Honda Motor Co. reported that its September sales jumped nearly 29 percent to 82,531.

Volvo will add EV, extend plug-in hybrid lineup

Volvo Car Corp. is developing its first all-electric light vehicle and broadening its lineup of plug-in hybrid vehicles, betting that their time has come in the wake of stricter environmental rules and Volkswagen Group's diesel-emissions scandal. Volvo will extend its plug-in hybrid strategy to its smaller 40-series vehicles, which include the V40 that will be produced on a new platform in Belgium starting in 2017, and it will offer the full-electric vehicle by 2019, the automaker said in a statement.

Cai Jianjun, former sales chief of Changan Automobile Co.'s joint venture with PSA Peugeot Citroen, has been appointed vice president for sales at BAIC Motor Co., according to Chinese media. Cai will lead the sales and marketing team for BAIC's Senova car brand, reported the Economic Observer, a Beijing-based newspaper.

CAAM says China aims for 30 million unit output capacity by 2020

BEIJING -- China will aim to have the capacity to produce 30 million light vehicles a year by 2020, according to an industry association, a figure that is lower than analysts' estimates of the country's current capacity. The capacity target was outlined in a speech that Vice-Secretary Shi Jianhua of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers made on Friday.

Qoros unveils midsize crossover at Milan expo

MILAN -- Chinese carmaker Qoros Automotive Co. unveiled a new crossover model -- dubbed Qoros 5 -- at the Milan expo last week. The company says the vehicle was jointly designed by teams in Shanghai and Munich. The crossover is undergoing engineering tests in Granada, Spain.

Johnson Controls Inc. says it will increase Chinese production of batteries for stop-start systems as carmakers seek to meet the country's tougher fuel efficiency standards. About 40 percent of new vehicles will be equipped with stop-start systems by 2020, the year when China will require automakers to further lower the average fuel consumption, says Ray Shemanski, a Johnson Controls vice president overseeing aftermarket and power products.
